Our Man on the Street and frequent blog contributor Pat sent us some pictures. He went to Winter Park for the holidays with his lady friend Andrea, and of course they took Sandbar shirts along.
This is a nice change from all the tropical photos we've received lately! And since we've had very little snow in Lawrence...we'll have to live vicariously through our customers.
It's a good thing our man on the street Pat keeps sending material our way for this blog, otherwise we wouldn't have much to talk about. Thanks, Pat!
Here's a picture of what the morning after a Sandbar party looks like.
Here's what he had to say: "Headed to work. My truck sure looks like I've been to a Sandbar party. In my backseat: Santa and pirate suits, pirate mug, cowboy hat, tinsel, Bob Marley glass, pair of boxers, jumper cables, and a purple flower hangin' from the rearview mirror."
Sure sounds like a Sandbar assortment of stuff to us.
Every once in awhile, we find Sandbar shark toys in other places. Sometimes they're in peoples' bathrooms, or on their desk at work, or in this case, at other bars in downtown Lawrence.
This shark was spotted at the Jazzhaus.
And this one, at Yokohama. Both sharks were found and photographed by our eagle-eyed man on the street, Pat. If you see a shark toy somewhere, snap a photo and send it to us!
Sandbar drink toys sometimes show up in unexpected places. While we don't advocate vandalism or littering, we're always amused to see where our trinkets appear.
Former bartender and man on the street Pat sent us this picture:
Yes, that's a mustache on a tree near 8th and Mass in downtown Lawrence.
In other mustache-related news, we discovered via Facebook that the Toy Store in downtown Lawrence is featuring Mustache Mondays. Wear your mustache (real or fake!) into the store on Mondays and compare yours to the ones worn by their toyologists!
We've got another new tropical drink! It's not really "tropical," it's more like "seasonal," but whatever.
Thanks to our Man on the Street, Pat, for passing on the recipe for this one. It's been described as "Christmas in a glass" by Sandbar friend Ellie, who can't stop drinking them.
What is it?
An apple cider-like concoction with vodka and other spirits. It's perfect for the upcoming holiday season. If you haven't tried it yet, what are you waiting for?
Thanks also to bartender Tegan, who gave the drink its name.
And for those of you who stick around Lawrence- or come home to Lawrence- for Thanksgiving, we'll be open that night when you need a break from your family.
Former Sandbartender, current draught specialist on call and man on the street Pat uploaded this fantastic picture to our Facebook page awhile back:
Yes, that's our boy Blair. Bartender extraordinaire and apparently a fraternity rush chairman in his past life. We're pretty sure Blair could sell anyone on joining his fraternity...as long as you don't make him angry.
Things Blair doesn't like: people who order fourteen different drinks at the same time for the various members of their group, people who order drinks with fourteen different ingredients and people who yell his name at the bar. Especially people who yell his name to get his attention and then do one of the above; or worse, realize they actually have no idea what they want to order.
Thanksgiving is almost here! Where did this year go?
Earlier this month, we asked for ideas from you, our loyal customers, about the designs you'd like to see on our popular pint glasses. We didn't get a huge response, but we did get a few great ideas.
Our Thanksgiving pint glasses won't be here until Monday, but we love the design so much we don't care.
The Sandbar logo is on the other side of the glass. Dave created the artwork for this one, based on ideas that came from our friend Susan and man on the street Pat.
Stop by next week and add a Thanksgiving pint to your collection of Sandbar glasses! And watch for our winter/Christmas themed glass coming soon, followed by a Happy New Year glass.
Our first hurricane video ran for awhile, and then we moved up in the world and hired the local TV station to create our next one back in 2002.
Our stars moseyed down the street to Channel 6 studios and tried to be professional. We probably failed miserably, but we had fun doing it. At least we didn't get kicked out of the studio.
Hurricane video #2 starred a whole host of local celebrities:
Sandbar Dave and his wife Debbi as the anchors
Tom Conroy, owner of Kaspar's Pub (now Conroy's Pub) and Peach's brother
Patrick Conroy, Peach's other brother
Patty Kennedy, posing as a local real estate agent
Pat Mushrush as our "man on the street"
Gary Bartz, owner of Don's Steakhouse
Al Hack, local insurance agent
Marty Kennedy, former mayor of Lawrence
Sue Hack, former mayor of Lawrence
Warning: this video is LONG. It featured our original hurricane song at the end- a revised version of Copa Cabana, sung by Scott "Showtime" Schoenberger, Peach, and Larry Hofmeier. While loading this video, we discovered a hidden track-our revised version of Love Shack that rolls during the credits, along with a few bloopers. This song didn't stick around very long, so many of you might not remember it, or maybe you never even heard it. Frankly, we forgot about it and were pleasantly surprised we still had a recording of it.
Get ready, Lawrence- this is going to be a BIGGER one!
(Note: the original video, in all its glory and including the full length of the storm, was over 15 minutes long. Yes, 15 minutes! I cut out the storm portion for your viewing pleasure and it saved about a minute of boring storm footage. You're welcome.)
Way back in 2001, Peach came up with the crazy idea for an indoor hurricane. Who would have thought that nine years later, we'd be working on our seventh video and still blowing napkins around the bar every night?
Many of you probably weren't around in 2001 when the first video debuted. Lucky for you, we still have a copy of it. Unlucky for those of you with motion sickness issues, we only have a copy on DVD that we couldn't figure out how to convert and upload to YouTube. Instead, we played it on our TV and recorded the screen with a Kodak zi8. Yeah, we're professional.
The original video was filmed and edited by some random guy that Peach found. It featured anchorman Dave; hurricane expert Patrick; man on the street Pat; and mayor (for real) Marty. And Knobbie from the Wheel makes a cameo appearance; see if you can find him.
Be sure to watch for the VH-1 style pop-up videos with fun facts.
We originally planned for the large fish tank to be part of the show- a storm was supposed to take place in the tank, but we couldn't ever get it to work right. Anyone remember that?
Oh, and the song! Our original hurricane song was set to the tune of Copa Cabana and sung by Peach and our friend Showtime.
Here it is, in all its ridiculous glory:
Leave us a comment and let us know if you remember this video, or if it's new to you, what you think.
