This weekend was the third annual Get Downtown! event in Downtown Lawrence. The past two events (read about them here and here) were held directly in front of The Sandbar, and everything was contained in one block of 8th Street. This year, however, a new group called Just Like Lawrence took over the planning of the event and expanded it to a two-day downtown festival.
The fun started on Friday with bands all day and plenty of events for families and kids, lots of food and drink vendors, and more of the same on Saturday.
The Sandbar was open all afternoon on Saturday as usual. We set out our mermaid/pirate and beach people photo-op cutouts on the sidewalk, and lots of passers-by took advantage of them. The kids especially seemed to love them!
One of our favorite sights from Saturday was the rock-star parking space in front of the bar that held an ever-changing mix of scooters and motorcycles; at one point there were eight of them in one spot.
Tonight we're very excited for our live music event which features Peter Mayer, the lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefers Band. This is the third time, I think, that Mr. Mayer has performed at The Sandbar and it's been several years since the last show. It is officially sold out- which is not hard to believe since our capacity is only 49 people.
Check back tomorrow for pictures and stories from the show!
